Human Bowen

Bowen Therapy is a gentle rolling type action performed using mostly fingers and thumbs over muscles, tendons and ligaments. This releases the muscles and any toxins trapped under them, and lets the body realign itself.  It is purely working over soft tissue (not bone) and there is no manipulation of hard tissue and no force is used or needed.

Bowen’s appeal to many arises from the non-invasive way it seeks to treat the body. A typical treatment will last approximately 45 minutes and will involve the practitioner addressing an area of the body and leaving the patient for approximately 2 minutes, before returning to attend to the next movement. This interval time allows the body to relax and absorb the treatment within a specific area. Many people receiving a Bowen Treatment will drift off ….as it is a very relaxing experience! Practitioners normally suggest 2-3 treatments, but often find the number varying dependent on the discomfort or particular condition relating to the individual patient...

Having said that, different people experience different sensations, as Bowen attempts to relax and repair areas that may have been under duress for many years. Just some of the conditions that Bowen can help improve are:

  • Stress
  • Circulation, Lymphatic and venous draining
  • Asthma and Allergies
  • Elimination of toxins
  • Joint mobility
  • Posture
  • Tightness of muscles, tendons, ligaments
  • Some Common People Ailments Bowen Therapy Can Assist

Back Pain- One of the most common presentations to Bowen Therapists is Back Pain. The Back is central to the body in that most leveraging is done utilising the back as the lever. The back connects many of the body's key musculature functions and as such is fundamental to the interplay between muscles, tendons and ligaments.

Bowen greatly assists those suffering from Back Pain by paying attention to other areas which are intertwined and can greatly reduce the amount of strain placed on the back. Hamstrings and pelvic areas for example, may also be treated to reduce these pressures on the back.

Frozen Shoulder - The capsule of a shoulder joint includes the ligaments that attach the shoulder bones to each other. When inflammation occurs within the capsule, there is less ability for the shoulder bones to freely move within the joint. Bowen utilises a number of  free ranging movements that can re-invigorate these previously frozen cavities and greatly increase the mobility of the frozen joint

Asthma - Asthma is a disease in which inflammation of the airways causes airflow into and out of the lungs to be restricted. The muscles of the bronchial tree become tight and the lining of the air passages swells, reducing airflow and producing the characteristic wheezing sound. This is known as an asthma attack, which can occur as an allergic reaction to an allergen or other substance (acute asthma), or as a part of a complex disease cycle which may include reaction to stress or exercise (chronic asthma).Bowen assists asthma sufferers by focussing movements on a number of key asthma affecting areas on the body.
